Are you talking about the GMRS Radio Service? And are you stating that my
Icom U-16 cost less than, say, a Yaseu FT-530?
Buying an inexpensive GMRS unit (like the Uniden GMR100 or the Radio
Shack unit) is a worthless purchase - IF you ever intend to access
repeaters that offer public assistance. You need CTCSS and at least
a watt to hit our system in SoCalifirnia - the Repeater User's Group -
on 462.675 with a CTCSS tone.

Also useful. It's absolutely AMAZING how often ... perhaps once
every other month ... I do this while listening to the radio and
discover my favorite station transmittin in MONO!!! It's always
fun to call them and tell ... they NEVER notice, and it's better when
you say that you see that embarassing straight line on the scope. Do
radio stations ever actually monitor their own signals? Are the people doing

You know: If someone did find a mod somehow, the first person to do it
would then complain about how it increased the intermod problems. :) But
I guess it just doesn't sink in with some folks that the RS design is a
GOOD thing for a 2-meter only rig.

It wasn't a real BP-8 pack, but rather an ICE pack. But after much
more playing around, and finding a REAL BP-8 pack, we found the real
problem.
The ICE pack was allowing RF back into the radio somehow. If you held
the unit well away from all surfaces it would work fine. If it was
close enough to your body so that you acted as a ground plane, or put
it on a metal surface, it would ALWAYS error out. If you hooked it up
to an antenna that did not need a ground plane, or an external antenna,
it would always work fine.
Moral of the story? Test before you buy. I'd recommend the rubber
duck that comes with the unit, holding the base of the unit up against
your chest perpendicular to the radio such that you become the ground
plane. If it works fine that way, chances are you are in the clear.

Hi,
I have just acquired a IC-22A 2M transceiver and noticed that there
is a difference in the sideband used for receiving 144-146 and 146-148. Why
is this done, and is it critical? Thanks.
Does anyone know what the difference between the 144-146 version and

Thanks.

The TM-732 is designed to be a MOBILE radio. The frontend is pretty much
wide open. Therefore, when you hook it up to a gain antenna the front
end folds up like a house of cards.
A friend of mine has had the same problem you are with his TM-732 and
corrected it by using an external antenna tuner designed for two meters.
He tells me that the UHF side of the radio doesn't have the problem that
the VHF side does.
I have personally tried out the next generation TM-733 and it has the
same problem. I have just used one on a base station gain antenna
though. I understand that they work okay in a mobile with a lower gain
antenna. Of course the guy who told me that was trying to sell me the radio.
Good luck, Mr. Phelps!

I bought my 723a the first day they were available in the US two years

I have a TM-731A, a TM-431A, and a TK-805. The latter is the Kenwood
commercial version of the ham TM-431A. The UHF receiver in each of these
radios is nearly identical. And yes, they all fold in downtown anywhere.
The only solution I have found is to ALWAYS use receive CTCSS. Of course,
you have to talk everyone you want to QSO with into always transmitting the
same CTCSS tone. Even with CTCSS, it will still get hits from intermod
which happens to have the CTCSS tone you are using.
Please let me know if a real fix is found!

Subject: Viking Ranger Xmtr
I thought I would add that the Johnson Viking Ranger
was sold both as a kit and an assembled and tested
product. If the one you are working on was a kit
built model, you may see a few modifications, like
the extra 1/4 in. phone jack you describe. I don't
recall my Ranger having that.
If the final is well neutralized, you should see
a peak in grid current occur with a dip in plate
current.
The outstanding feature of the Ranger was its attention
to sheilding. It was constructed with prevention of
TVI in mind.
It was also an expensive radio; I never had one until the
early 1970's, at which time they were selling for less
than $100. That was quite a bit less than their initial
price in the mid-to-late 1950s.
Best regards,

It is marginally better than dung, IMHO. It suffers from incredible intermod
problems. The tuning adjustments inside are not staked so from time to time
you hear cores from the 450 resonators rattling around inside. The antenna
connector has a habit of coming loose unless you locktite it. If you do locktite
it you cannot get in to replace the surface mounted lights for the LCD panel.
The microphone jack "ground" lead is not connected to anything. All in all it
is a marginally useful incredibly sensitive piece of <wanna buy mine?>
