  89. Are you talking about the GMRS Radio Service? And are you stating that my
  90. Icom U-16 cost less than, say, a Yaseu FT-530?

  92. Buying an inexpensive GMRS unit (like the Uniden GMR100 or the Radio
  93. Shack unit) is a worthless purchase - IF you ever intend to access
  94. repeaters that offer public assistance. You need CTCSS and at least
  95. a watt to hit our system in SoCalifirnia - the Repeater User's Group -
  96. on 462.675 with a CTCSS tone.

  121. All I can say is that I'm a satisfied user of the rfc 2/70g. Only thing 
  122. is 5 in gets 30 and 20 out for 2 and 440 respectivley.

  181. Also useful. It's absolutely AMAZING how often ... perhaps once
  182. every other month ... I do this while listening to the radio and
  183. discover my favorite station transmittin in MONO!!! It's always
  184. fun to call them and tell ... they NEVER notice, and it's better when
  185. you say that you see that embarassing straight line on the scope. Do 
  186. radio stations ever actually monitor their own signals? Are the people doing
  187. it incapable of telling by listening (I sure can tell).

  341.  It wasn't a real BP-8 pack, but rather an ICE pack.  But after much
  342.  more playing around, and finding a REAL BP-8 pack, we found the real
  343.  problem.
  344.  
  345.  The ICE pack was allowing RF back into the radio somehow.  If you held
  346.  the unit well away from all surfaces it would work fine.  If it was
  347.  close enough to your body so that you acted as a ground plane, or put
  348.  it on a metal surface, it would ALWAYS error out.  If you hooked it up
  349.  to an antenna that did not need a ground plane, or an external antenna,
  350.  it would always work fine.
  351.  
  352.  Moral of the story?  Test before you buy.  I'd recommend the rubber
  353.  duck that comes with the unit, holding the base of the unit up against
  354.  your chest perpendicular to the radio such that you become the ground
  355.  plane.  If it works fine that way, chances are you are in the clear.

  373. My old (new to me) steam-powered ARGOSY (not Argosy II) has no RF gain
  374. control or RF attenuator on it's front end, and is getting crunched on
  375. 40M (I have 2 elements on 40 at about 60' and it seems to be getting
  376. confused by local broadcast stations).

  378. Anyway, I heard somewhere that there were "mods" for this situation.
  379. Before I hack in a switchable RF attenuator, could someone direct me to

  440. The TM-732 is designed to be a MOBILE radio.  The frontend is pretty much 
  441. wide open.  Therefore, when you hook it up to a gain antenna the front 
  442. end folds up like a house of cards.  
  443.  
  444. A friend of mine has had the same problem you are with his TM-732 and 
  445. corrected it by using an external antenna tuner designed for two meters. 
  446. He tells me that the UHF side of the radio doesn't have the problem that 
  447. the VHF side does. 
  448.  
  449. I have personally tried out the next generation TM-733 and it has the 
  450. same problem.  I have just used one on a base station gain antenna 
  451. though. I understand that they work okay in a mobile with a lower gain 
  452. antenna.  Of course the guy who told me that was trying to sell me the radio.

  470. ago at Dayton.  The UHF side was virtually unusuable in Detroit.  I sent
  471. the rig back into Kenwood to see what they could do with it under
  472. warranty.  Whatever they did (and I *think* it was to de-tune the UHF
  473. front end) worked fine.

  496. I have a TM-731A, a TM-431A, and a TK-805.  The latter is the Kenwood
  497. commercial version of the ham TM-431A.  The UHF receiver in each of these
  498. radios is nearly identical.  And yes, they all fold in downtown anywhere.
  499. The only solution I have found is to ALWAYS use receive CTCSS.  Of course,
  500. you have to talk everyone you want to QSO with into always transmitting the
  501. same CTCSS tone.  Even with CTCSS, it will still get hits from intermod
  502. which happens to have the CTCSS tone you are using.
  503.

  516. number of the radio is:

  519. He says the mod for the TH241a that he has to open full TX doesn't seem
  520. to work on his rig...  So the only mod he currently has opens the TX
  521. for MARS/CAP only.

  535. I thought I would add that the Johnson Viking Ranger
  536. was sold both as a kit and an assembled and tested
  537. product.  If the one you are working on was a kit
  538. built model, you may see a few modifications, like
  539. the extra 1/4 in. phone jack you describe.  I don't
  540. recall my Ranger having that.

  587. It is marginally better than dung, IMHO. It suffers from incredible intermod
  588. problems. The tuning adjustments inside are not staked so from time to time
  589. you hear cores from the 450 resonators rattling around inside. The antenna
  590. connector has a habit of coming loose unless you locktite it. If you do locktite
  591. it you cannot get in to replace the surface mounted lights for the LCD panel.
  592. The microphone jack "ground" lead is not connected to anything. All in all it
  593. is a marginally useful incredibly sensitive piece of <wanna buy mine?>
